100 Ways to Make Your Dungeon Interactive

Category:

A lot of D&D and Pathfinder combats are static slug-fests that take place in featureless, rectangular, often nearly empty chambers. Shake that up with these items for the bad guys to use… or the good guys to use first. Outside combat, some of these items might be used when searching the room or to help navigate to other parts of the dungeon.

Decide what kind of a location your dungeon is. When creating a location, roll 1d100 a few times to find things to add to the space to create potential havoc or drama. In game design terms, these are called “affordances”. You might even let players spend a point of luck to “notice” something you didn’t plan for. Or they can just ask “Is there something I can knock over?” with hopeful, puppy dog eyes.

Remember that dungeons and ruins are not perfect places. Not only should they have old furnishings (and new, if the place is still occupied), they should have imperfections like leaking water, cracks, rubble, loose stonework, plant growth, and such.
