Roll up a Chest

Fittings include straps (to provide strength at the cost of weight), corner braces, hinges, and locks. Roll 1d6 and then roll for the description. However, do be careful, and don’t get eaten by a mimic.

1 = Strong Box

A strong box is typically made of iron or wood heavily strapped with iron. These tend to be very heavy even when empty and very hard to open by force.

  • Top… (1d6: 1=rounded; 2-4=flat; 5-6=beveled).
  • Fittings… (1d6: 1-5=iron; 6=steel).
  • Handles… (1d6: 1-5=iron; 6=none).
  • Decor… (1d6: 1-4=plain; 5=painted; 6=ornately engraved).
  • Locks… (1d6: 1-2=one; 3-4=two; 5-6=three).

2 = Crude Trunk

A crude trunk is a chest that’s carved out of a length tree trunk, often with the round top cut off to serve as a lid, with or without hinges. (That is, the lid may simply lift off when unlocked).

  • Locks and lid… (1d6: 1=latch only, hinged; 2-3=one, hinged; 4=one on both sides, lift-off; 5=two on one side, hinged; 6=two on both sides, lift-off).

3-4 = Travel Chest

Travel chests tend to be smaller and have no feet. A rounded top sheds rain. A flat one stacks well and works well as a seat. A beveled one sheds rain somewhat and still works as a seat.

  • Top… (1d6: 1-2=rounded; 3-4=flat; 5-6=beveled).
  • Fittings… (1d6: 1-3=iron; 4-5=brass; 6=none).
  • Handles… (1d6: 1-3=iron; 4-5=wood; 6=rope).
  • Decor… (1d6: 1-3=plain; 4=etched; 5=carved; 6=ornately carved).
  • Locks… (1d6: 1-3=one; 4-5=two; 6=three).
  • Special feature… (1d6: 1-2=none; 3-4=has a false bottom for documents; 5=covered in leather; 6=has a small, flat drawer at the bottom, accessible from outside, for documents).

5 = Footed Chest

Footed chests tend to be meant more as furniture. The feet help keep it away from damp floors and vermin. If large enough and with a flat top, they act as a bench seat and may even be disguised as such.

  • Top… (1d6: 1-2=round; 3-5=flat; 6=beveled).
  • Fittings… (1d6: 1-3=iron; 4-5=brass; 6=none).
  • Handles… (1d6: 1=iron; 2=wood; 3=rope; 4-6=none).
  • Decor… (1d6: 1-2=plain; 3-4=painted; 5=carved; 6=ornately carved).
  • Locks… (1d6: 1-5=one; 6=two).
  • Special feature… (1d6: 1-3=none; 4=covered in leather; 5=has a false bottom for hiding documents, accessible from outside, between the legs; 6=has a locked drawer at the bottom, accessible from outside).

6 = Drawer Chest

A drawer chest may be too tall to act as a bench or be small enough to travel. It stands on legs or a plinth and typically has doors and/or drawers rather than a lift-up top, because the top acts as a table. (This evolved into the modern chest of drawers.) It may have a drop-down front to keep the drawers closed during travel; it could even have a separate stand or second chest so the drop-down front acts as a writing desk.

  • Top… (1d6: 1=round; 2-3=bench; 4-6=table).
  • Fittings… (1d6: 1=iron; 2=brass; 3-6=none).
  • Handles… (1d6: 1=wood carvings that act as hand-holds; 2-3=handles; 4-6=none)
  • Decor… (1d6: 1=plain; 2-3=painted; 4-5=carved; 6=ornately carved).
  • Locks… (1d6: 1-2=none; 3-4=one, on the drop-down front; 5=two, on the drop-down front and one drawer; 6=one on each drawer/door).
  • Doors & drawers… (1d6: 1=lift top and two drawers; 2=three drawers; 3=two doors and one drawer; 3=two doors and two drawers; 5=one door and two drawers; 6=one door and three drawers).
